The philosophy of Spier’s cellarmaster Frans Smit is simple: to get the most out of each grape with as little interference as possible. As one of the oldest farms in South Africa, located in Stellenbosch, Spier is a well-respected ‘big boutique winery’. As custodians of this impressive heritage, caring for their land and the surrounding environment is at the very heart of everything they do.
Their environmental awareness shows in their farming and business approach. Alongside being certified organic, all of their water and 98% of their solid waste is recycled. A member of the Wine Industry Ethical Trade Association (WIETA), they actively invest in the local community through charities such as Growing for Good and Tree-preneurs.
They not only do good, but make delicious wines. According to Frans: “Top quality grapes from prime vineyards are the essential building blocks for premium wine, and expressing the very best from the South African terroir”. And trust us, Spier know how to express the Stellenbosch land expertly. Don’t just take our word for it – they were named South African Wine Producer of the Year at the IWSC (International Wine & Spirits Competition) 2018, and took home the IWSC Chenin Blanc Trophy 2018 and Sauvignon Blanc Trophy 2018 for their 21 Gables Chenin Blanc 2016 and 21 Gables Sauvignon Blanc 2017 respectively.
