TASTING NOTES

An outstanding, textbook Sancerre. Lucien Crochet is renowned for his excellent Loire wines, and “La Croix du Roy” Sancerre is one of them. Vinified in stainless steel with a late racking to insure that the wine captures the essence of the terroir, allowing the Sauvignon Blanc’s raw material rather than any oak dressing to carry the day.  Notes of Citrus fruit with delightful earthy and herbal tones, this is exactly what a great Sancerre should be with white stone-fruits emerging, a chalky minerality on the palate and a pleasing Yuzu citrus finish

WHY YOU’LL LOVE THIS WINE

La Croix du Roy is a textbook expression of Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc — crisp, terroir-driven and endlessly elegant. Extended Taste Notes

Pale gold in the glass with silvery edges. The nose is fresh and vibrant, revealing layers of citrus blossom, lime peel, green apple and subtle crushed stone. On the palate, it’s focused and linear, with racy acidity carrying flavours of lemon pith, white peach and chalky minerality. There’s a gentle herbal lift on the finish, with impeccable balance and length. This is a precise, poised Sauvignon Blanc that highlights both grape and ground.

Producer

Lucien Crochet’s great-grandfather married into the Picard family, who had been winegrowers in Sancerre since 1765, and thus laid the foundations of Domaine Lucien Crochet. The estate now owns thirty- one hectares of vineyards planted in various parts of four communes in the Sancerre appellation, including the largest single holding of vineyard property in Bué. Hand harvesting – a rarity in Sancerre – and the use of indigenous yeasts give particularly nuanced, elegant wines.

Several vineyard sites provide grapes for this rosé, including the Côte de Bué and the Clos du Roy, where the vines are thirty-five years old. Two different soil types feature: Oxfordian limestone and Kimmeridgian marl.

The grapes were direct pressed; eight-five percent of the juice was transferred to tempterature-controlled tanks and fifteen percent to oak barrels for a twenty-day fermentation. The wine was bottled in the March following the vintage.

Food Pairings

Sancerre La Croix du Roy pairs well with:

  • Crottin de Chavignol (goat cheese)

  • Grilled seabass or lemon sole

  • White asparagus with hollandaise

  • Herbed chicken or roast guinea fowl

  • Thai green papaya salad

  • Quiche with leek and chèvre

  • Fresh oysters and langoustines

  • Sushi or sashimi platters

Wine Region

Sancerre lies in the eastern part of the Loire Valley and is considered one of the world’s greatest regions for Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyards stretch along rolling hills overlooking the Loire River and are planted primarily on three distinct soil types: terres blanches (chalky clay), caillottes (limestone pebbles) and silex (flint). These soils lend Sancerre its signature minerality and finesse. The cool continental climate helps retain acidity and aroma, while precise viticulture and traditional winemaking preserve terroir expression.

Wines from Sancerre are prized for their purity, precision and aging potential — and Domaine Lucien Crochet is a leading name in this tradition.
